This is the hardest one I have ever worked on. [Update 10/24/2006: thanks to you all reading this post and posting other links, I have since found more interesting ones -- look through the comments - the one posted on October 9th appears to be pretty hard, though maybe I just made a mistake on it]   When we were with my parents last weekend, we found out that my parents are big Suduko fans, and do quite a number of them during the week, in different papers, page-a-day calendars, etc.

Dad was trying to find a hard one for me, and found a "six star" one, that turned out to be not that hard - reasonably difficult, but similar to what I had seen before.  We had been trading secrets of how we figure out puzzles the fastest, and he liked one of my starting first-pass rules, but then found a puzzle that using his rule, and then my rule still did not find a single number during the first pass.  After that, the only step I know is to start writing down all possibilities, and it is sort of interesting to see how fast you can narrow them down, it is a little too brute force for my taste, and so I am not interested in it as much.

Don't ever name your child the same name as you. It confuses everyone, from doctors to insurance carriers to airlines. USAir and United won't let me check-in online any more, since it can't figure out what to do with Jonathan and me. We both have different frequent flyer numbers, but it is confused. USAir says to call United, and United says to call USAir. A "Pearl Smith" (there's a Indian name...) at United says though she won't take responsibility for what she says, and it is her real name, I should wait in line at USAirways. (More)

On Friday, we all had fun on the Kuhns' new indoor trampoline. I showed Will how we used to count while jumping, and he jumped and counted (by ones) all the way to 100. He did not make himself start over if he missed a jump, he just kept jumping until he remembered the next number. But Alissa thought it might have been the first time he counted all the way to 100 without skipping any numbers. Then he went by 100's to a thousand. He originally wanted to go to two thousand but he was tired and someone else wanted to jump. (More)

Thursday morning at breakfast, Jonathan said to me, "Maybe you should try vibrating your two glasses. I'm vibrating mine!" as he tapped gently on his orange juice glass with his spoon. (More)

Lo and behold, robins' eggs appeared in the nest this very Easter morning! There are three. Jon took a picture which will be up sometime...

I was working on the computer this morning, so Heather and Jonathan made it downstairs before I did. Jonathan asked Heather if he could make breakfast (eggs, since it is Saturday), and Heather said that he wasn't ready to do it by himself, and do it with Daddy. (More)

Last night we had a spectacular and very close thunderstorm roll though. The lightning actually struck a transformer down the street, cutting our power at around 10:30. (More)

Jonathan now has an imaginary friend. Her name is "Su-su" or "Soot-soot" or some combination/permutation of those sounds. She has a big house (not a small one) and she has toys there, usually three. We like to go to her house in the evenings if we aren't going somewhere else. (More)

Found an interesting spyware/virus/malware/etc at the Quinlisks yesterday. It was a "Browser Helper Object (BHO)", a method of getting your own code put inside of the windows explorer, and thus pretty hard to remove. (More)

Recently, Jonathan has been drawing a lot. He likes markers best, but if I don't have enough energy for them (supervision - though he can now clean up the table himself when he gets some there which makes it easier on me) he will do crayons. (More)

From Vicki:
Just a reminder that Oral Arguments will be heard tomorrow in Judy's case. The judge could make a ruling tomorrow from the bench, or otherwise he has up to 120 days to rule. There is a possibility the case could be dismissed or it could go to trial. I will post an update as soon as I've heard from Judy after court tomorrow with the results. (More)

On Saturday morning, April 1st, I saw the mother robin checking out the nest over our door. I put up a blanket over the window (since I never got to finding a one-way glass) so our comings and goings would not disturb the nesting. There are no eggs yet, and I have not seen her again. I sincerely hope that my seeing her that morning did not dissuade her from picking that spot for her nest this year.
