It's taken a long time and persistence, but I have now succeeded! Today I bought several gallons of oil, milk, and orange juice, and I did not bring a single bag home!
Before Jonathan was born, I could expect one paper bag inside one or two plastic bags for every $10 spent on groceries. Once I started putting them in the basket under the stroller, however, I also started insisting on no bags for the larger items - it just took up too much space and didn't fit well. They always thought it was strange at first, but now they are used to me, and even comment on how well I can pack everything in (that's my Dad's genes coming through!)

I thought this was a good idea at first as well, but the problem is, we no longer have any trash bags...

You should have told me -- I could have brought you up a couple hundred. :)
