After two and a half years of sleeping in a family bed, it is surely ingrained in me. When our friends' daughter needed to spend the night with us when her baby brother was being born, I couldn't bear the thought of putting her in another room.

She even has her own room at home. But I felt I would be an irresponsible babysitter if I did not have her right near me. So Jon took the small mattress from the computer room and placed it on the floor next to our bed. She slept fine, and when she woke up at 2am wanting her mom, I was there to comfort her immediately and take her downstairs to rock her back to sleep.

After she went home, we left the mattress there for Jonathan to start getting used to. I suspect that four of us could fit in our king bed (the baby will be much smaller than my giant pillow!) but I have been thinking that my getting up with the baby will disturb Jonathan. He sleeps through without nursing now, with rare exeption, but he is aware of my movements.

Last night, I put him to sleep on the small mattress for the first time. He slept great (only a few coughs and they didn't wake him up enough for him to want any nursing.) But the funny thing is - I missed him! Crazy, but I missed him rolling against me and sticking his legs over mine. The bed felt spacious, yet empty. Well, soon we will have another family member to occupy the space.

How cool that he had an example of someone sleeping on that mattress to think about before sleeping there himself!
