Somehow the appliance spies informed our dryer that we were at Sears looking at a new dryer.  Heather wanted to get a new one, since this one doesn't have a low heat setting - but the dryer has worked fine for years. The next time we used our dryer, it refused to start a couple times, and then grudgingly gave in, but made more noise than it used to.  Jonathan and I took it apart on Saturday, cleaned out old gunk, oiled the bearings, put it back together, and it still sounded the same.  It just stopped working tonight.  I think it overheard the Sears salesperson call today to say that the dryer is ready for pickup.  The Calvettis are loaning us their mini-van on Sunday in order to bring it home.

I was thinking it was kind of like the widow's oil and flour. As soon as the new one is available, the old one runs out. Of course, since we won't pick it up until Sunday, I have to take the clothes to the laundromat for a week.

Oooo, I can't wait to hear about the new one! Did you get a washer, too? I do understand the offended appliance phenomenon. I'm glad our refrigerator is the forgiving sort, and is still working even though we went so far as to drag it to the garage, and drag it back when the delivery men couldn't get the new one into the house.... (Long story)

Jonathan and I spent an afternoon a week or two ago at the mall, getting boots and checking out washers and dryers while Heather and Noah were at a baby shower.
The front loading washers are neat since Jonathan would be able to use them, but after talking with Heather, she really only wants a new dryer, and the high-efficiency washers would maybe be nice, but needed at the moment. So, when the time comes for a new washer, we will revisit that question, but for now, we will keep the washer we have.

I just realized what actually happened. The dryer wasn't offended; it just knew it was on its deathbed, and managed to communicate that fact to Heather. :)

We got the new dryer on Sunday and it is such a blessing! It dries so easily on a low setting. I think next time I do a diaper wash, I'll see if I can use medium heat instead of high. Also, the box it came in is a very fun house, it even has its own window.
