I have not been too interested in paintings or going to art museums (except I did always like to see the Tiffany glass work.) I will admit that I had my doubts about whether Jonathan would like the Van Gogh bits, simply because I had no appreciation for them myself.
But I determined to show them to him with the same enthusiastic voice with which I show all of the bits. As Mom would say, the more he is exposed to, the more he will be interested in, and more importantly, the more he will love learning.

So now, somewhat to my surprise, Jonathan loves the Van Gogh paintings and asks for them first, even before the musical instruments which are newer and more interesting to me! It's similar to my surprise at his liking black olives, which I don't.

Jon has wondered about the quick showing of the bits, but I always give Jonathan the opportunity to play with and look at the bits on his own time after I show them. Often he will just toss them around (which probably has some learning benefit though I'm not sure what), but yesterday he looked at each Van Gogh painting carefully before tossing it off the couch.

How does he indicate to you which bits he wants to see first? I know that letting him examine the bits afterwards is your idea and not in "the books," and I think it's a great one.

He will either point or say something that sounds like it could possibly be Van Gogh (to a mother's ear.)
