Jonathan loves to watch the garbage truck come down the street and pick up the trash. This morning, we spent 25 minutes standing at the window, watching the world, waiting for the truck, watching the truck, and learning new things.
Every once in a while, I would notice that a smaller truck, similar to a large pickup or small dump truck, would come down our street instead of the regular garbage truck. I always wondered why that one came - was there a strike, was a truck broken, who knows?

Today, after the garbage truck went down our street, it backed up again (not unusual, our street is narrow) and then that small truck pulled into our driveway, turned around, and backed up the street towards the large truck. Then it dumped its load into the big truck!

I really wonder how that makes for efficiency, what the city's reasons for doing it that way are. Maybe some of the alleys are so small that the large trucks to not fit.

In the land of the union, it could be that "big" garbage truck drivers are much more expensive than "little" garbage truck drivers.
