Yesterday, I mailed the payoff check for our mortgage.  This is very exciting for us.  To be completely debt free (even of 'good' debt) and really truly own our house.  Sure, it helps to have a house that didn't cost very much to start with.  But we have been paying extra every month, and now there's enough in savings to pay off the balance.  Ten years and thousands of interest dollars early, yay!

Do you realize how rare you are? "Debt-free" is not even in the vocabulary of most Americans. I know that a lot of hard work and discipline went into your success, as well as buying an inexpensive house in the first place. :)

I'm proud of you guys!
Getting my college degree without debt is one of the things I am most proud of in my life right now.

For us, that is one of those things we can't really be proud of, since our parents paid for most of it.
I don't know the exact numbers, but doing some rough calculations, I get:

32% need-based scholarships from CMU.
4% academic scholarships
12% summer jobs
11% teaching stipend
41% parents and saved up money from every birthday, etc.

The teaching part sure helped in the last couple years, when I got free tuition in exchange for teaching, particularly since Erica had started college, so my parents weren't thrilled about paying two tuitions...

We found the year we paid two tuitions to be a great one because of the resultant increase in scholarships. From that point of view it was even better than the year Porter was unemployed. If we'd known, we'd have had twins :) or at least encouraged Janet to go to college early.
