I have been teaching Jonathan using a not-so-intense version of the programs recommended by The Institutes . I'm adding this post here, because I want to give updates as a kind of diary. But I wanted to clarify in public why I am doing it. If it really does work, what better and easier... (More)

I went to a dermatologist this morning to have a mole removed and a small skin lump checked out. My referring doctor said this dermatology practice is the best in Pittsburgh. However, I really am getting more and more disillusioned with medical practice as we know it. As soon as I walked in, I... (More)

I have been evaluating different version control programs for my company for the last month or two. My current evaluation is that all of them are broken, although I hope to discover a good solution someday soon. Serena's Version Manager (PVCS) I have spent a lot of time with Version... (More)

I signed up with Citibank/Mastercard my freshman year in college. I used to sign up for stuff on campus quite often, as they would give me various free things, t-shirts, radios, $100 gift certificates, etc. I also felt somewhat sorry for the vendors, as their income was $1 every time they got... When I came into work today there was a copy of the Financial Times , a newspaper I used to read in college but haven't seen in a long time. There was a front page story on John Kerry speaking in Massachusetts yesterday. I found a couple quotes humorous: " Saddam Hussein was a brutal... (More)

I have been reading a serious of articles by Bob Kauflin, written for Crosswalk.com . I don't agree entirely, and I think he is primarily focused on younger people, those who like so-called "praise" songs, and don't like hymns, so if you do not understand that camp, you might not get as much... Jonathan had a routine blood test at his 9 month appointment, and they say he has a high lead content in his blood. They are re-running the test today, to make sure that they didn't mess it up the first time. The city will test your water, so we did that this morning. I think it takes a week... (More)

Ever notice how it now takes a year for Acrobat Reader to load up? You can speed it up about 20x or so, by moving the plugins you don't use out of the "startup" folder. If you put the files into the "optional" folder, I believe it will still be able to find them when you want to use them, and... (More)

This will be short because I really don't have time to type up the whole adventure (maybe Mom can pry it out of me before the next newsletter!) We went with Alissa, Will, and Nate. Jonathan's favorite parts were the fish and the llama. My favorite parts were the nursing gorilla and the sea... (More)

Pittsburgh vehicle drivers need to learn the law. A guy swerved into me on my bike today. I honked at him, but he continued into my path. I yelled at him, and he stopped and got out of his car and made like he was going to do something. He then decided better of it (I guess I must have been... (More)

Jonathan had a doctor's appointment today, and he weighed in at 23 pounds, 10 ounces. 27 inches long. Maybe that is why I sprained my neck yesterday tossing him in the air. (More)

I thought I would be writing this post to say how great Lingo is, and how you should all sign up for their service. They answer their phone within a couple rings, no matter when I called, and sounded like they would be able to fix any technical problems I had. However, after spending hours on... (More)

I was looking at our pictures again and realized that Jon had put my Isaac pregnancy pictures on Jonathan's pictures page. Is it any wonder why? You can see the difference in my hair length, and that's about it! (More)

I had a revelation today. While we felt very supported back in November, we have recently been more feeling on our own. Certainly, people want to care for us, and probably don't know how to do that. But, I think the bigger issue is that most people we know do not agree with our decisions about... (More)
