Sunday, February 19, 2006, Jonathan went skiing for the first time. Just after 11am, we headed east to Seven Springs, which is the closest/best mountain to Pittsburgh. We arrived at the parking lot at 12:45, then took a shuttle to the lodge. We got off at the wrong place and had to walk to the... (More)

One reason Jonathan talks so well is because we talk to him like a real person. Children learn by hearing and by imitating. It is sometimes amusing to hear the things that he says. For example, he got a valentine's day card from Aunt Ellie, and as he saw the stickers on the back and was... (More)

20 weeks, half way. Baby is moving a lot, but still not yet felt by the outside world. I borrowed a home blood pressure monitor and that has been nice. It's on the low side, but within normal range, so I am happy. (More)

Jonathan likes to play with the water in the sink, using cups and sponges, etc. I have a "three strikes" rule - after water gets on the floor three times, he has to turn it off and stop playing. Recently, he has actually finished his play before getting to the third time. Christmas Eve, he... (More)

12/22 - We were playing the piano, singing some carols, and Jonathan sang, "Rejoice! Rejoice! Man-u, man-u, man-u, man-u, man-u, shall come!" Later that morning, way before his usual naptime, he was nursing and I saw his eyes roll back in his head, and the lids closing. This surprised me, so I... (More)

Much of the Jonathan news is best encapsulated by quoting him: 12/15 - We slept late, and/or the garbage truck came early. We were having our pre-get-up nursing and I heard the truck in our street. Jonathan did too, for he lifted up his head and said, "Oopsie, trash truck!" and then sat up. So... (More)

Since we paid for the professional license, we get OpenMake for "free", so I figured I would try it out. The conclusion is that it isn't worth anything. The longer version is that it, like all Merant products, is quite hard to actually get up and running. When the manual says, "you aren't... (More)

Like so many other articles on this subject, I will start by saying that I looked at various documents, but none of them worked perfectly for me, so I will write up my own steps. Most of the regular readers of this blog will not care at all about SMTP authentication, TLS, SSL, port 25, 465, 587,... (More)

Based on an excruciating headache Wednesday afternoon, October 12, that did not go away, Jon and I headed to West Penn Hospital Emergency Room at 10:30pm. A friend came to the house to watch Jonathan while he slept. Here is an aside - it was so good for Jonathan that he did not come, he would... (More)

Since it appears that Speakeasy is not going to be able to figure out how to reconnect our internet, at least for a while, I got internet working simultaneously on our desktop and our laptop this morning. The trick is that the laptop has the modem, and only has a wireless network connection to the... We recently switched our automobile insurance to State Farm, because Amica doubled their rates on our homeowners policy, a bait-and-switch sort of thing - they told me the estimated rate, and I agreed, spent a month trying to get the inspector to come look at the house. The only thing he pointed... I happened to check my logs this evening and discovered that a spammer had tried to send one of my clients a few emails over the weekend. Only 100,000 or so. He was being blocked via an RBL, but that still takes up resources, so I manually blocked his IP address, as well as ran a ping -f -s... (More)

Sunday after church Jon suggested we go sailing again since we did not make it the day before. After lunch, we headed out again, this time to North Park because it is closer. The wind was strong, the best we've had in Pittsburgh so far. However, it was also gusty and changed direction a lot in... (More)

My friend gave me an update on our mutual friend whose baby is due next week. The doctors want to induce now, a week early, "because the baby has lost weight." How do they know this? By ultrasound. Which can be wrong by a pound or more in either direction. Another friend had a similar... (More)

It is a new month, and therefore, a new point on my email graph . A couple interesting things this month: one, you can tell I went on vacation, and probably also that I knew Heather was gone the week before, so I wasn't emailing her as much either. Two, spam has now hit the 30% mark (note: the... (More)
