I went to a dermatologist this morning to have a mole removed and a small skin lump checked out. My referring doctor said this dermatology practice is the best in Pittsburgh. However, I really am getting more and more disillusioned with medical practice as we know it. As soon as I walked in, I... (More)

I have been evaluating different version control programs for my company for the last month or two. My current evaluation is that all of them are broken, although I hope to discover a good solution someday soon. Serena's Version Manager (PVCS) I have spent a lot of time with Version... (More)

A couple guys here at work have been working on some puzzles. They didn't like my solution to the 3rd puzzle, as they wanted it to be more math base and not like programming. Here are the puzzles: Assume: a and b are positive integers. ( I think this condition only matters for the third... (More)

Someone off-handedly mentioned on the midwives list that so-called "crack babies" are really mis-named. While crack is certainly not the thing to do, medical research says that it isn't any worse than alcohol or tobacco. There are a number of articles, like this one that can be found from... (More)

I needed to create a floppy disk today, and needed to find RawWrite again, since my Cygwin dd seems to not be making it correctly. I found a nifty GUI version of RawWrite that is nicer than the old command line version. Sure, the command line works fine, and I am all for command-line things,... (More)

When I came into work today there was a copy of the Financial Times , a newspaper I used to read in college but haven't seen in a long time. There was a front page story on John Kerry speaking in Massachusetts yesterday. I found a couple quotes humorous: " Saddam Hussein was a brutal... (More)

Wake up at 3AM because you can't sleep. Notice that the shower has not drained from the day before. Plunge the tub to force the water through the slow drain. Eat breakfast and decide that now is as good a time as any. Start ripping up the floor at 4:30AM. Stop to go to church (try to... (More)

I added a small color changing picker (bottom right of this page), if you don't like my purply colors. Of course, you can only pick the colorsets that I let you, and right now there isn't much interesting, but I will get around to making some more at some point. We probably need a crazy color one... Ever notice how it now takes a year for Acrobat Reader to load up? You can speed it up about 20x or so, by moving the plugins you don't use out of the "startup" folder. If you put the files into the "optional" folder, I believe it will still be able to find them when you want to use them, and... (More)

Bernie says our car is dead. He can't figure out what is going on. He thought maybe the dealership might know something, but he didn't have a lot of hope. I have heard that a 1988 Dodge Caravan was/is a really good car, and should last a long time. I do see lots of them around Pittsburgh.... (More)

Not that I am particularly looking for a job at Google, but they have had some fun entry questions lately. The one I saw this morning in a magazine was: To send a fax, Dial the four digit access code Y where 60097 equals f(f(f(Y))). This machine has extension number Z where f(f(Z)) =... (More)

Hopefully, we are different than "Patio Man" , but Heather and I had been considering doing something with our old linoleum kitchen floor, as it seemed impossible to clean. Last week I was in Busy Beaver and saw wood laminate floors on sale, so I decided to get some. It ended up being a... (More)

The Graduate Christian Fellowship at Carnegie-Mellon University has a group that meets weekly for discussion of various articles. I rarely make it to the discussion, but this week's topic was David Brooks's articles on Patio Man and the "Sprawl People" . I was asked for a summary of... (More)
