Daley Ponderings
Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things.
I love this song very very much!
"He makes all things beautiful in His time"
at what age did diane ball write this song in 1941?
Where did you get that year from? I have it as 1978, but I suppose that is a copyright date with a publisher, so maybe it was written before that?
(interesting to note that our blog is the number 1 hit in google for "In His Time")
I find the date it was posted much more meaningful than the date it was written... and yes, I noticed the google ranking too. I guess that shows one of google's weaknesses: the top hit is not necessarily the most informative.
May I have your permission to copy the words of this song in a book I am writing for Papua New Guinea? I will give your name and date with it.
You would have to talk with the copyright holder, which is not me. (and perhaps they wouldn't want me to publish it here either, but I usually figure people like their stuff published to further more interest in their work, but maybe that's just because I believe in open source)
My suspicion is that people like their stuff published even better if you provide a link to where someone could buy their stuff.
That said, I'm not sure anyone's ever going to sue you over this blog post. The Wikipedia entry on Fair Use cites US law as follows:
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.
You're probably in trouble with #3 but probably out of trouble with #4 - though with this blog entry near the top of Google on searches for "in his time diane ball" I might be wrong.
Now, if you are making money from this blog post, you're definitely in trouble - but I'll wager that making money off these lyrics was the furthest thing from your mind when you posted it.
I decided to check the lyrics of this song on net because the song kept on singing in my heart. I believe the Lord wants to do a beautiful thing in my life. I shall testify as soon as it happen.
It is such a beautiful song to minister to the Lord at my present situation.
God bless you.
I was on staff at Springs of Living Water Conference Center when the Lord gave this song, melody and lyrics... it was in the 70's. Her father Cecil Cooper and wife Lillian were founders and directors of the Springs which later merged with YWAM. Diane was on her way to an Aglow meeting in Kelseyville, Ca.,...as speaker, was late, driving many miles, and she heard not only the melody but the words as she drove with her husband Jay. Later Marantha held a songwriters conference at the Springs and that is when they accepted her song and it has gone from there.
In the 80s, I was visiting my daughter in Hawaii and Diane Ball was at a Bible Class that we attended at a friend's house. We were discussing our prayer requests and I told the group that I had been praying for my husband to stop drinking for about 23 years and I added that I would keep praying because God tells us in scripture "In an acceptable time have I heard you..", Isaiah, 49.8. Diane Ball picked up her guitar and said that was what I was thinking about when I wrote this song and she sang "In His time" for us. It was so beautiful and I often played it by the Maranatha Singers as I prayed. I would like to report that my husband stopped drinking in 1994 because the doctor told us that he would have a stroke if he didn't stop drinking. My husband told me that he remembered when I took care of his mother after she had a stroke in 1969 and he couldn't put me through that again. So, after drink heavily from 1959 to 1994, he has never had another drink to this day; it was the acceptable time God always keeps His promises.
Thanks for that story Joann. It is sometimes hard to remember that God does keep his promises.
My husband & I are looking to follow God's leading into pastoring in a church. I have been having a
hard time waiting. Just this morning God gave me some verses on waiting , trusting & being content in whatsoever state I am in. Later this song came to me. I found this blog as I looked for the words.
Do you have any information about the history behind "In His Time," any story about why Diane Ball wrote the song? Thank you!
Janie, did you read Joann's comment above? It sounds like a pretty good source for your answer.
