After much disturbing of the poor robins, I have taken off the paneling over the window and have a lovely view of the nest. It is at a rather awkward angle for the camera, but I can still get some shots. I have a pillowcase suspended from the ceiling about 8 inches from the window, so that our... (More)

In my research on robins, I found this spectacular site called A Robin's Diary with videos and day-by-day updates. I picked a great time to take photos of our nest today - the parents had just come back from worm hunting when I got inside. I haven't put the pictures on the computer yet, but... (More)

Jonathan is saying new words so quickly now that it is impossible to keep track of them. Here are a few highlights from the past week. I once overheard a neighbor boy across the street complain to his aunt, "That baby is so annoying, he just keeps saying 'hi.' " But the other day, Jonathan did... (More)

On April 27, we went to the Zoo with Alissa, Will, Nate, and Sam. I sang to Jonathan the "We're going to the zoo" song and he repeated, "zoo, zoo, zoo!" He also repeated "cheetah" but he growled at the bears on his own. The elephants were much larger in real life than he expected and he didn't... (More)

April 16 - "buzz" like a bee, "thank you" !! what a thrill for Mommy - and he's been consistently saying it when we give him things, "whoa" for slipping or similar. Unscrewed the toothpaste cap. April 17 - "cheerio" with perfect pronuncation, "people", "bonk" (and repeatedly bonking his head... (More)

He seems to have at least one new word a day now. Sometime before March 24, he said "boots." On March 24 he signed "cheese" and drank some water from a small bathroom cup by himself without crushing the cup to a pulp and without spilling very much. He says water that sounds like "why." Other... (More)

Jonathan has been very happy with his bits recently, asking for them a lot. He is never bored with the picture bits, but I have had to scale down on the math and reading cards. However, the other day I discovered a way to show the math dots that keeps him riveted. I say the number several... (More)

I wrote this script a while back to upload (via HTTP) a zip file full of .pbm files, convert all the pictures to bitmaps, put the bitmaps in a zip file, and then send it back to the user.I don't know how secure it is, so I wouldn't leave it around published somewhere on a server, but... (More)

Jonathan has been asking to vacuum the house all week, but I told him we had to wait until Monday. Today he was so excited when I was vacuuming that he was bouncing and grinning and saying, "vacuum" over and over again. He also got a new set of reading words today and "vacuum" was one. He loved... I just realized that I haven't ever mentioned my Windows HTTP proxy server that I use. Web Washer is very useful. It turns out that yesterday was the two year anniversary of my using it on this computer. In that time, it has filtered: 227,646 images, 30,746 popups, 53,413 scripts, and... (More)

We woke up this morning (5ish) to no water in our upstairs bathroom. The downstairs sink was fine, which had been trouble before, so maybe I actually fixed that last year. The temperature was 9 degrees Fahrenheit, and typically, we have had trouble once it gets to the teens. We set up a... (More)

Jonathan's most recent set of family bits includes the people he knows best - Daddy, Mommy, and Jonathan. The Daddy and Jonathan bits, especially, get a big smile and happy sound when he sees them. When one of those happens to be the last one, he exclaims and points joyously, saying "Daddy!" or... (More)

Jonathan climbed down the stairs all by himself - beginning with turning himself around at the top, which was the limiting factor in his previous attempts. Very soon, I think, we will take the gates away. This success was from the third floor to the second, which has the (more easily)... (More)
