People at work have finally gotten sick of the lack of support from our IT department. Their FTP site was not operable the other day, and a sales guy needed to get some files for a meeting, so R&D purchased its own FTP site so we would be able to manage it, rather than depend on IT to get it working again. We just purchased it for a month, so then we could evaluate it after the month is over. The month has now run out, and so R&D decided to instead pay for my internet connection, and then I can run the server for them. Pretty nifty.

I went to a dermatologist this morning to have a mole removed and a small skin lump checked out. My referring doctor said this dermatology practice is the best in Pittsburgh. However, I really am getting more and more disillusioned with medical practice as we know it. (More)

I have been evaluating different version control programs for my company for the last month or two. My current evaluation is that all of them are broken, although I hope to discover a good solution someday soon. (More)

Jack Ganssle is a conference speaker and has a monthly newsletter that I have been subscribed to for a couple years. He wrote an article called, A Boss's Guide to Software Process Improvement that I found myself agreeing with the majority of it.

Speakeasy is my DSL provider. Snurgle.org also uses them, so that is how I heard about them. We have been using them for a year or so, and the ten times or so that I had to open a customer support ticket, it has gone quite well, and fairly fast response time (within a couple of days at the most). (More)

I signed up with Citibank/Mastercard my freshman year in college. I used to sign up for stuff on campus quite often, as they would give me various free things, t-shirts, radios, $100 gift certificates, etc.  (More)

When I returned our Lingo VOIP modem, I asked UPS to get a signature, since I figured Lingo would try to say they never received it or something. Below is a picture of the signature UPS got from "L Manwiller".  (More)

Charles Finney isn't all that popular at my church, so hopefully I don't get kicked out for reading this (:, but I finally got around to starting to read Lecture Notes on Theology by Finney this morning, when I woke up early due to a cold.
I have only read the first couple of pages, but have found it excellent so far. (More)

When I came into work today there was a copy of the Financial Times, a newspaper I used to read in college but haven't seen in a long time. There was a front page story on John Kerry speaking in Massachusetts yesterday. I found a couple quotes humorous: (More)

I have been reading a serious of articles by Bob Kauflin, written for Crosswalk.com. I don't agree entirely, and I think he is primarily focused on younger people, those who like so-called "praise" songs, and don't like hymns, so if you do not understand that camp, you might not get as much out of the talks.
I also purchased a cd somewhat recently by Indelible Grace, and have liked a number of their songs. The lead singer, Matthew Smith is releasing a new cd shortly, and there is an interview on his web page. (More)

I had some boards made by Imagineering, and they are excellent. Currently, they have a $100 for 10 board special, and the second order is free, so I saved a ton of money by not using Advanced Circuits who we usually use. 4pcb messed up a board I sent to them last time, where their mask leaked in a couple places, somewhere around 30 thousandths. Their engineer was supposed to get back to me, but ignored my emails.
Imagineering answers the phone quickly, their process was very smooth, and the boards look nice.

A friend told me about a nifty web page, FreeCycle. There are groups all over the place that have formed for the purpose of giving away stuff. I just got a Xerox machine from a company downstairs from my office, but I wouldn't ever have heard of them had it not been for FreeCycle.
By the way -- the company that gave me the copier is called Radio Information Services, and the service they provide sounds neat.

I just discovered last night that if you type in more than one word into the address bar, FireFox assumes you are doing a google search, and even better, does the "I'm feeling lucky" feature of google. So, if you type Jon Daley into firefox's address bar, it goes to my home page. Faster than typing out snurgle.org...

Bernie says our car is dead. He can't figure out what is going on. He thought maybe the dealership might know something, but he didn't have a lot of hope.
I have heard that a 1988 Dodge Caravan was/is a really good car, and should last a long time.
I do see lots of them around Pittsburgh. But, something is messing up the engine, so it has a hard time starting and a hard time idling. I guess if you keep your foot on the gas, then it does alright, although it wears out the starter.
I don't really want to buy another car. They are so much money, and I don't have any idea what a good price is.
