Christmas Eve morning, Jonathan threw up. It turned out to be a stomach bug, so the performance repeated itself several times. (More)

We woke up this morning (5ish) to no water in our upstairs bathroom. The downstairs sink was fine, which had been trouble before, so maybe I actually fixed that last year. The temperature was 9 degrees Fahrenheit, and typically, we have had trouble once it gets to the teens. (More)

Our DSL went down and Jon called me and did a three way with Speakeasy to see what was going on. After trying a couple of things that did not work, Jon mentioned that it was raining, but not lightning. I went to the window to check things out, and I saw a Verizon guy up at the telephone pole. (More)

Last night, our four-year-old friend William was telling us about the state of their basement playroom. "You don't want to go downstairs, it's a disastrophe!"

I went to vote this morning on the way to Women's Bible Study. The most interesting part was that Jonathan somehow got ahold of the "Independent" label from the voting machine and was chewing on it when we got back outside. I thought I had kept him from touching it! I gave it back to one of the ladies there, but it wasn't really useable any more. I hope we didn't mess anything up.

We happened into the kitchen when the heat was on - and found a balloon floating in the air above the register! Jonathan thought it was quite interesting, and so did I! Here is a video.

Our paperwhites from last year are starting to show little green tips!

Our hot pepper plants are starting to flower again. I wonder if there will be any fruit, since the plants are now indoors for the winter.

I went to a dermatologist this morning to have a mole removed and a small skin lump checked out. My referring doctor said this dermatology practice is the best in Pittsburgh. However, I really am getting more and more disillusioned with medical practice as we know it. (More)

There is a spot of wall on the landing of our basement stairs that has been getting soggier as the summer progresses. We've had lots of rain, and every time it rained hard enough, the spot would be damp. I finally called someone who advertised in the Pennysaver and he came this afternoon. (More)

The last of our four gospel fish was so weak on Monday that he got stuck in a plant. Then when I freed him, he got stuck on the filter intake. So it was time to put him out of his misery. I can't do the most humane way - that is, one quick slice to cut the head off - so I did the next, a cup of poison. I used rubbing alcohol, but in the future, I'm going to try to find a more toxic poison, because it seemed to take longer than was really humane. I did apologize to him.

A couple guys here at work have been working on some puzzles. They didn't like my solution to the 3rd puzzle, as they wanted it to be more math base and not like programming. Here are the puzzles:
Assume: a and b are positive integers. (I think this condition only matters for the third puzzle)
1. Given a and b, how do you swap the values without using a third temporary variable?
2. Given a, what is the function to make b = a+1 if a is odd, and b=a-1 if a is even? You are not allowed to use conditional statements.
3. Given a and b, what is the function to make c=max(a,b) without using conditional statements?

Dr.Anderson called and said that Jonathan's lead came back 9.2. That's below their threshold of 10, but still some, so he said to be careful, make sure we wash his toys and keep the rugs vacuumed and watch out where he plays. Jon isn't really satisfied with that and said he'd call him to see what he'd recommend if Jonathan's levels were over 10.

Ivan came through yesterday, pouring rain for 24 hours, and flooding many parts of Pittsburgh. But today - wow! It's sunny and cool and gorgeous. I went shopping in the morning (Fridays are shopping day, but it was pouring) and I just couldn't help a huge smile as I walked to Foodland. It was 60 degrees (it's a little warmer now) and I had jeans and a light jacket on. It was invigorating! Yay for Fall!

Jonathan had a routine blood test at his 9 month appointment, and they say he has a high lead content in his blood. They are re-running the test today, to make sure that they didn't mess it up the first time.
The city will test your water, so we did that this morning. I think it takes a week or two to get the results back. (More)
